TYPE: Wingate Polychrome

DATE: A.D. 1125 to 1300 (Carlson, 1970;25)

BOWL DESIGN PLACEMENT: Primary interior designs (occasionally primary exterior designs as well), secondary exterior designs.

COMMON DESIGNS: Interior designs are the same as found on Wingate Black-on-Red, occasionally white outlines some of the black interior designs, exteriors are painted with red designs on white slip.

KEY DIFFERENCES: Later St. Johns Polychrome exteriors have white designs painted on a red slip.  Wingate Polychrome has an all-over exterior white slip with red designs painted on it.  Querino Polychrome (equally temporally) has a balance of red and white slips or paints on its exteriors with neither being painted on the other. Slightly earlier Houck Polychrome has red designs painted on an unslipped but polished exterior.
