TYPE: Tonto Polychrome DATE: 1340 to 1450 A.D. (Neuzil & Lyons 2005;34) COMMON FORMS: Bowls, jars. COMMON BACKGROUND COLORS: Red and white. TYPICAL COLOR SCHEME: Black on white on red. Often there are separate white and red slipped portions with black designs painted on the white. BOWL DESIGN PLACEMENT: Interiors, exteriors, or both. COMMON DESIGNS: Generally the same as Gila Polychrome. KEY DIFFERENCES: Tonto Polychrome has red slip background color incorporated with black-on-white design. Tucson Polychrome usually has thick black lines outlined with thin white painted lines, whereas Tonto Polychrome usually has thick black lines painted on a white slip.
