TYPE: San Carlos Red-on-Brown DATE: A.D. 1250 to 1450 (Neuzil & Lyons, 2005;59) COMMON FORMS: Bowls, jars, pitchers. COMMON BACKGROUND COLORS: Natural brown that may be tan to brown, often with black fire clouds. BOWL DESIGN PLACEMENT: Exteriors COMMON DESIGNS AND/OR MOTIFS: Layouts on bowls are usually in a large horizontal band, while jars usually have two bands, one around the body, and one around the neck. Common motifs are multiple parallel lines, or vertical and diagonal line hatching, crosshatching, barbed lines, barbs often having square and/or F-hooks attached, ticked lines and solids, keys, rectilinear scrolls, swastika's, and dots. DIFFERENCES: San Carlos Red-on-Brown bowls usually have a well smudged,
dark black interior with no interior design. Tanque
Verde Red-on-Brown bowls usually have a secondary interior design
(often pendant from rim) and if smudged is usually a gray or mottled
black and brown color. San Carlos bowls usually will not have a raised or indented bottom, while most Tanque Verde bowls will have an intentionally raised or indented bottom. A raised or indented bottom is most common on medium to large Tanque Verde Bowls.
1N Salado San Carlos Red-on-Brown Jar. Approximate Dimensions: 12" or 30.5 cm. by 10" or 25.4 cm.
2Y Salado San Carlos Red-on-Brown bowl with a design within framing lines. Approximate Dimensions: 4 1/4" or 10.3 cm. by 2 1/2" or 6.3 cm.
3Y Salado San Carlos Red-on-Brown bowl with smudged interior and design going to the rim. Approximate Dimensions: 6 3/4" or 17.1 cm. by 3 1/4" or 8.2 cm.
4N Salado San Carlos Red-on-Brown bowl with non-smudged interior, and design going to the rim. This bowl could almost pass for a Hohokam Tanque Verde bowl. However, the glass smooth polished surfaces, and even thickness of the vessel, confirm that it is in fact Salado San Carlos Red-on-Brown. Approximate Dimensions: 7" or 17.8 cm. by 3 3/4" or 9.5 cm.
5Y Salado San Carlos Red-on-Brown bowl Approximate Dimensions: 6 5/8" by 3 3/8"
6Y Salado San Carlos Pitcher (handle missing). This pitcher has three bands of design, all within framing lines. The body band has parallel lines and solid triangles with attached F-hooks. The upper shoulder band is made up of interlocking and non-interlocking rectilinear scrolls. The neck band is made up of solid triangles with attached squared hooks. The inner rim has painted "ticks". Approximate Dimensions: 4 3/4" or 12.1 cm by 4 3/4" or 12.1 cm.
