TYPE: Gila Specular Black-on-Red DATE: AD 1300 to 1450 (Neuzil & Lyons 2005;34) COMMON BACKGROUND COLORS: Red. BOWL DESIGN PLACEMENT: Interiors. COMMON DESIGNS: Basically the same as Gila Black-on-Red and polychrome. KEY DIFFERENCES: Painted with black specular hematite that sparkles brilliantly in light. COMMENTS: The paint of these vessels are reminiscent of Hohokam Broadline Purple-on-Red and Trincheras Purple-on-Red which both use specular purple hematite. This type has not been formally described (new type).

S2Y Salado Gila Specular Black-on-Red bowl, painted with spectacular specular hematite paint that sparkles brilliantly in light. This is one of the largest painted bowls of any kind that we have ever seen. Although this bowl has no "life line, the recurved rim dates this vessel A.D. 1350 to 1450. Approximate Dimensions: 17 1/2" or 44.5 cm. by 8 1/2" or 21.5 cm.
