TYPE:
Vahki Red
DATE: Pioneer Period Redware dates from beginning of Vahki Phase to
end of Snaketown Phase:550-750 A.D.
COMMON FORMS: Ollas, Bowls, Bowls with slightly flared rims.
DIAGNOSTIC FORMS: Slightly flared rim bowls (for a complete list of
forms see Haury,1976)
COMMON BACKGROUND COLORS: Red (Slipped)
EXTERIOR TREATMENT: Polished, no coiling or grooving in Vahki Phase,
however in the Estrella Phase coiled and grooved examples occur.
COMMENTS: Vahki Phase ceramics have not yet been reported in the Tucson
Basin. Surface sherds seeming to fit the Vahki description have been
found approximately 25 miles Southwest of Tucson in the Altar Valley.
These sherds have a small amount of very fine mica temper barely noticeable
on the surfaces. Vahki Red examples from the Phoenix Basin have much
more noticeable mica. The Altar examples could possibly be a local variety
of Vahki Red.
