TYPE: Transitional Early Casa Grande Red-on-Buff
(Also known as Late Sacaton, or Santan Red-on-Buff)

DATE: Approx. 1125-1150 A.D.

COMMON FORMS: Bowls less common than Jars. Jars usually have low Gila Shoulders (at the bottom of the jar) with short to tall straight necks, the shoulders are usually not as sharp, often smoothed or even rounded compared to most Gila Shouldered jars of the preceding Sacaton Phase. Helmet or exaggerated flare-rim bowls are no longer being produced.

COMMON BACKGROUND COLORS: Natural brown or buff slipped.

EXTERIOR TREATMENT: Hand-smoothed or tool polished.

PASTE: May or may not be porous.  Commonly with or without observable mica.

COMMON DESIGNS AND DESIGN PLACEMENT: Primary bowl designs can be painted on the interior, exterior, or both. Curvilinear or angular scroll designs common. Connected chevron patterns with alternating straight and wavy lines are common, as well as, vertical, diagonal, cross, and wavy line hatching. Possibly the most common design found on jars is the independent or “divorced” squiggle line. Single squiggle lines are often found above and/or below the jars main body design (sometimes this is the only neck design as well).

KEY DIFFERENCES: Jars with low Gila Shoulders in combination with straight necks. Vertical hatching in many designs.

COMMENTS: This type of pottery is considered transitional between Late Sacaton and Casa Grande. Transitional pottery is described as having various diagnostic traits from two time periods or phases. These types are made when one time period or phase “transfers” into another.
