TYPE: Boldface Black-on-White AKA: Mangas Black-on-White DATE: A.D. 750 to 1000 (Brody & Leblanc, 1983;45) BOWL DESIGN PLACEMENT: Primarily interiors, occasionally exteriors. COMMON DESIGNS: Designs usually go to the rim and occasionally have a painted band immediately below the rim. Occasional life forms. Heavy framing lines that are wider than hatching lines. Designs are usually bold or heavy, although late examples are not bold, and framing lines become the same size as the hatching lines, these late examples usually have no rim band. KEY DIFFERENCES: Designs usually go to the rim without rim bands. Some late examples may have a rim band. Early examples often have wavy linework and curvilinear designs. Late examples often have straight line hatchure with thick framing lines. COMMENTS: Boldface Black-on-White is the original and currently most popular name for this type. Other names given to this type are: Mangas Black-on-White, Wind Mountain Black-on-White, Style I, and Style II.
