A trumpet is made from a large univalve shell by abrading the apex of the spire away as can be seen in the photos below. By compressing the lips and blowing into the abraded end, a deep penetrating tone can be heard from a long distance. Trumpets have been recovered from numerous ruins in the Southwest. The one photographed below is Hohokam and was found broken then re-constructed. Notice the drilled hole on one end, possibly for hanging around the neck of the user. 1Y Hohokam Trumpet
