TYPE: Woodruff Red

DATE: A.D. 900 to 1100 (see comments)

KEY DIFFERENCES: Thin "watery" red slip on a soft paste. Sand tempered. Showlow Red is sherd tempered (Hays-Gilpin, Hartesveldt, 1998;152).

SLIP OR SURFACE TREATMENT: Thin red slip, well polished.

VARIETIES: Non-smudged and smudged.

TEMPER: Fine sand.

COMMENTS: Dates are assumed to begin sometime during the production of Kiatuthlanna Black-on-White (Cibola Whiteware) as examples of Woodruff Red have reportedly been found on the floors of Kiatuthlanna pit houses (personal conversation with present owner of the Kiatuthlanna Site) and end with the ending date of Woodruff Brown.

1N Woodruff Red Bowl Smudged Variety.

This bowl was reportedly found with the minerals inside of it (possibly Gallina).

You can see a "rainbow" of colors shining off of the smudged surface of this bowl.
