TYPE: Tusayan Polychrome

DATE: A.D. 1250 to 1285 (Oppelt, 2008;52)

COMMON BACKGROUND COLOR(S): Orange

PRIMARY BOWL DESIGN PLACEMENT: Interiors.

COMMON DESIGNS: Simple broad red bands or stripes on bowl exteriors. The bowl interiors had complex designs often consisting of wide red lines laid down in an offset quartered layout, sometimes ending in large key frets. These wide red lines were then outlined with thin black lines. On the orange areas between the lines are more black painted designs done in solids, staggered elements, barbed lines, key frets, vertical hatching, etc. The centers are usually left open.

KEY DIFFERENCES: Loop handles common on bowls. Designs are not the same as earlier Tusayan Black-on-Red designs. Tusayan Polychrome often has "late" black designs painted on the orange areas between the red stripes, and red-on-orange exteriors.

VARIETIES:

1) Primary designs (like Citadel), red outlined in black-on-orange, secondary design (unlike Citadel), red-on-orange.

2) (Primary) Red outlined in black-on-orange, with black painted designs on orange areas, (secondary) red-on-orange.

The interior design is like that of earlier Citadel Polychrome, what makes this bowl Tusayan is the red stripes painted on the exterior, the loop handle, the black painted barbed lines and vertical hatching.
