14Y Salado Tonto Polychrome Olla Approximate Dimensions: 13 1/2" by 9 1/2" An interpretation of this olla coincides with a Mesoamerican Myth. One where "the moon and stars tried to kill the sun but were defeated. This drama reenacted daily with the sun's descent into the Underworld and subsequent rising the next morning after again overcoming these denizens of darkness." (Christman, 2002;35).The red circle outlined by a barbed black line: THE SUN, low in the design (at this time a depiction of it's descent into the Underworld). On each side of the sun, solid red and black thick lines or "PATHWAYS" to follow in the sun's rising from the darkness to defeat the moon and the stars once again. With the MOON & STARS being represented by the negative circle and square dotted motifs. An extremely rare depiction of the Sun and Moon's daily battle on Native American Pottery.
