What are "Friendship Bowls"?

The Tohono O'Odham potters made this vessel form to commemorate a dance.  Participants of this dance include all ages of the tribe, plus guests from neighboring tribes. They join hands, dancing in a circle of peace and friendship.

An interpretation of this bowl is that if all members of the dance join hands, each offering their best, in times of individual turmoil and trouble there will be a surplus in the bowl for those in need. The other dances will carry those in need until they too can dance again and join in the celebration of life.
