||
TYPE: Showlow Black-on-Red DATE: A.D. 1030 to 1200+ (Hays-Gilpin, 1998;155) BOWL DESIGN PLACEMENT: Interiors. COMMON DESIGNS: There is a considerable design variation, some resemble Puerco and Wingate Styles of White Mountain Redware, others have a unique style. Usually a large circle or square area is left unpainted in the bottom. KEY DIFFERENCES: Watery-thin red slip on a soft paste. The black paint is usually organic and often is burned off in places leaving a "ghostly" image or stain. TEMPER: Finely ground sherd and quartz sand. COMMENTS: The paste and exterior fire-clouds looks very similar to Pinto Black-on-Red of the Salado Culture.
