TYPE: Querino Polychrome

DATE: A.D. 1125 to 1300 (Carlson, 1970;25)

COMMON DESIGNS: Interior designs are the same as found on Wingate Black-on-Red. Occasionally white outlines some of the black interior designs. Exteriors usually have large red and white designs opposed to each other.

KEY DIFFERENCES: Querino Polychrome exteriors have a combination of red and white slips or large designs opposed to each other. The slips or paints are not applied over or on each other, rather they are separate, touching only where they meet. Wingate Polychrome usually has red designs painted directly on an all-over exterior white slip.

COMMENTS: Considered by many to be a variety of Wingate Polychrome, Querino Polychrome is different technologically.

3N Querino Polychrome Bowl. The fine interior design proves this likely to be a late example.

The exterior has a wide white band, and a most interesting painting of a human that apparently lost one finger.  Perhaps the bowl once belonged to an individual that once had an accident and severed the finger. The severed finger is clearly painted a distance away from the right hand.

Approximate Dimensions: 7 3/4" by 3 5/8"
