TYPE: Puerco Valley Polychrome DATE: A.D. 1100 to 1300 (Hays-Gilpin, 1998;155) BOWL DESIGN PLACEMENT: Primary interior designs, secondary exterior designs. COMMON DESIGNS: There are three known varieties described as follows: Querino Style Variety: Exteriors have bands of red and white slips (see Querino Polychrome under White Mountain Redware). St. Johns Style Variety: Exteriors have white line designs (see St. Johns Polychrome under White Mountain Redware). Springerville Variant Style Variety: Exteriors have black painted designs on bands of red and white slips (see Springerville Polychrome Variants under White Mountain Redware). KEY DIFFERENCES: White paint or slip added to normal Showlow Black-on-Red vessels. TEMPER: Finely ground sherd and quartz sand. VARIETIES: Querino Style St. Johns Style Springerville Variant Style COMMENTS: This type has not been formally recognized (new type). The name Puerco Valley Polychrome was chosen because Showlow Polychrome has already been taken under the White Mountain Redware Section. Two of these three polychrome varieties have been mentioned as varieties of Showlow Black-on-Red (Hays-Gilpin, 1998;155) which must be rejected because they are clearly polychrome.
