4N Anasazi/Mogollon Puerco Black-on-White Pitcher
5N Anasazi/Mogollon Puerco Black-on-White Pitcher with four coil handle. This vessel has four different styles painted on it. The neck is painted in a Snowflake Style, the large checkerboard motif is common in the Puerco Style, the upper triangles of the body are painted in the Reserve Style, and the lower triangles are painted in the Gallup Style. Because the dominant design motif is the large checkerboard the type goes to Puerco. This vessel could make an arguement for ceramicists that are "lumpers", because after all, all these styles date to the same approximate time, A.D. 1000 to 1300. However, because of the overlap of styles, ceramicists that are "splitters" can argue that this vessel likely dates to approx. A.D. 1100 to 1150. Why? Because currently the beginning date for the Snowflake Style is A.D. 1100 and the ending dates for the Gallup and Puerco Styles is A.D. 1150. Perhaps this vessel was made during the 50 year span that all 4 styles were being produced.
