TYPE: Papago Black-on-Red

DATE: A.D. - 1850 to Present (Fontana et al., 1962;107-112)

 

KEY DIFFERENCES: Organic black (Mesquite sap) designs on a red slipped background.

SLIP OR SURFACE TREATMENT: Red slipped.

COMMENTS: Tourist pottery began about 1880 with the arrival of the railroad (read about forms below).

FORMS: Traditional ollas and bowls somewhat rare, most forms were made for tourists such as ashtrays, pitchers, coffee mugs, eccentric vessels, effigies, etc.. Rim coils are present in early examples dating from A.D. 1850 to 1900.

TEMPER: Sand and/or mica-schist, fired out organic temper was common with early vessels, tourist pottery was usually tempered with fine sand.

THICKNESS: Thickness of the walls of vessels were generally thin  (about 1/8" to 3/16") in Period 1, thick (1/4" or more) in Period 2 (although many tourists pots made from 1880 and later were often thin), Period 3 vessels that were used by the natives were often thick while the tourist pots were usually thinner.
