TYPE: Mancos Black-on-White

AKA: McElmo Black-on-White (see comments)

DATE: A.D. 1000 to 1150 (Oppelt, 2008;25)

BOWL DESIGN PLACEMENT: Primary interior designs, occasionally secondary exterior designs.

COMMON DESIGNS: Designs are often the same as Gallup and Escavada Black-on-White, occasionally Snowflake types described in the Cibola Whiteware Section of this guide. Designs may also be extremely simple such as just lines or dots.

KEY DIFFERENCES: All Tusayan Whiteware  types have a organic paint (organic paint often looks soft or watery so the edges are not as sharp as mineral paint) and are supposed to have light paste.  All Little Colorado Whiteware types have organic paint and are supposed to have a dark paste.  Mesa Verde Whiteware types may have mineral or organic paint.  See article titled General Pottery Descriptions.

PAINT: The black paint can be mineral or organic.

SLIP OR SURFACE TREATMENT: Most vessels are slipped white, however some are polished, but not slipped.
