TYPE: Kwakina Polychrome

DATE: A.D. 1300 to 1400 (Lanmon & Harlow, 2008;63)

BOWL DESIGN PLACEMENT: Primary interior designs on a white slip, secondary exterior designs that maybe in black, white, or black and white on a red slip.

VARIETIES:

Glaze-on-White Interior, Red Exterior

Glaze-on-White Interior, White-on-Red Exterior

Glaze-on-White Interior, White and Glaze-on-Red Exterior

Glaze and Red-on-White Interior, White-on-Red Exterior

Glaze and Red-on-White Interior, Black-on-Red Exterior

Red-on-White Interior, White-on-Red Exterior

KEY DIFFERENCES: Thick, often runny glaze paint.  Exteriors red slipped, interiors white slipped, occasionally interiors are part red and white slipped.

COMMENTS: Glaze paint may be black or green. Sometimes, if the glaze paint is eroded away, there may be a purple stain left in its place.

  

 

1N This variety of Anasazi Kwakina Polychrome has white painted designs on the exterior, and glaze painted designs on the interior.

  

2N This variety of Anasazi Kwakina Polychrome has no exterior designs.

 

3N Anasazi Kwakina Polychrome Bowl with no exterior design.

The above Anasazi Kwakina Polychrome bowl (3N) and this shard (4N) shows that occasionally the glaze paint bled an attractive pink stain into the white kaolin slip.

 

 

 

5Y This variety of Anasazi Kwakina Polychrome has glaze black and matte red paints on the interior, while the exterior has a glaze black painted design.

Approximate Dimensions: 8" or 20.3 cm. by 4" or 10 cm.
