TYPE: Kiet Siel Polychrome

DATE: A.D. 1225 to 1300 (Oppelt, 2008;21)

COMMON BACKROUND COLOR(S): Red for primary designs, orange for secondary designs.

PRIMARY BOWL DESIGN PLACEMENT: Interiors, occasionally secondary designs on exteriors.

COMMON DESIGNS: Interiors often have thick and thin black designs, staggered filler elements and hatching are common. Outlined in thin white lines. Exteriors may be red slipped or have broad red bands on an orange background.

KEY DIFFERENCES: Thick and thin black designs outlined by white on a red slipped background. Occasionally an orange area may be left in the center of a bowl making the background color orange and giving the piece four colors. The exteriors of bowls or ladles may also have broad red lines on an orange background.

COMMENTS: Exteriors of jars or other forms may have orange non-slipped bottoms.

Black outlined in white-on-red (the bottom is non-slipped).

Approximate Dimensions: 7 3/8" or 18.7 cm. by 6 3/8" or 16.2 cm. by 4 1/4" or 10.6 cm.

2Y Kiet Siel Polychrome Ladle

The interior is black outlined by white-on-red, the exterior is red-on-orange.

Approximate Dimensions: 11 1/2" or 29.2 cm. by 5 1/2" or 14 cm. by 3" or 7.6 cm.

3N Kiet Siel Polychrome bowl.

This variety of Kiet Siel Polcyhrome has four colors. The interior has black designs outlined in white-on-red-on-orange. The exterior has a wide red band on an orange background.
