TYPE: Kechipawan Polychrome

DATE: A.D. 1375 to 1475 (Lanmon & Harlow, 2008;64)

BOWL DESIGN PLACEMENT: Primary interior designs, secondary exterior designs.

DESIGNS: Early designs usually focus on the inner wall of bowls while later examples focus on the entire interior of bowls.

KEY DIFFERENCES: Glaze and red paints on a bright white, well polished slip. Late examples can have a yellowish crazed slip like that of later Matsaki types.

COMMENTS: Glaze paint may be black or green. Sometimes, if the glaze paint is eroded away, there may be a purple stain left in its place.

 

 

1N Kechipawan Polychrome bowl with a polychrome interior and red design on the exterior.

Approximate Dimensions: 8 1/4" or 21 cm. by 3 7/8" or 8.5 cm.

 

2N Kechipawan Polychrome bowl (in a state of restoration) with interior and exterior polychrome design.

 

 

3N This Kechipawan Polychrome olla has a creamy buff slip,

indicating a temporally late example (transitional to Matsaki Polychrome).

 

4N Kechipawan bowl with bichrome design fields.

Many Kechipawan bowls have at least one Polychrome design field.  This bowl has an interior design field consisting of black glaze-on-white, and an exterior design field consisting of matte red-on-white.
