TYPE: Houck Polychrome

DATE: A.D. 1100 to 1300 (Carlson, 1970;23&25)

BOWL DESIGN PLACEMENT: Primary interior designs, secondary exterior designs.

COMMON DESIGNS: Interior designs are the same as found on Wingate Black-on-Red. Exteriors have broad red designs painted on the polished natural color of the paste, which is usually buff.

KEY DIFFERENCES: Non-slipped exteriors with broad red designs painted on them.

COMMENTS: Considered by many to be a variety of Wingate Polychrome, the distinction is valid because of its technological difference as well as its temporal merit. This type is explained in detail in Carlson,1970;25-27. In the following quote by Carlson, slanted pottery type names have been added to alert the reader as to what type he is referring to: "these attributes are probably developmentally related to one another in the following sequence from early to late: (1) Houck Polychrome, red designs on unslipped paste; (2) Querino Polychrome, red and white designs on unslipped paste; and (3) Wingate Polychrome white slip with red designs over it.  There is actually some stratigraphic evidence that red designs on unslipped paste are the earliest (Roberts, 1932;112)", (Carlson, 1970;25).
