TYPE: Fourmile Polychrome

DATE: A.D. 1325 to 1400 (Carlson, 1970;71)

BOWL DESIGN PLACEMENT: Usually primary interior designs, secondary exterior designs.

COMMON BACKGROUND COLORS: Orange, occasionally red, sometimes with a part white area(s).

COMMON DESIGNS: Interior bowl designs usually cover the entire field and focus on the center, and have an inner rim banding line.  The banding line and most design units are outlined in white.  The exterior of bowls usually have double banding lines outlined in white with designs painted in between.  Jars usually have double banding lines on the main body and have designs painted in between and connected to them.

KEY DIFFERENCES: Bowls have an inner rim banding line.  Bowls and jars usually have double (sometimes single) banding lines on exteriors. Framing lines are usually at least twice the size as hatching lines, some Cedar Creek vessels share this trait but most earlier types do not.

2N Fourmile Polychrome bowl with an unusual interior "banding line".

The banding line common just below the rim on the interiors of Fourmile bowls is usually wide and painted black with a thin white line along the lower edge. The "banding line" on this bowl, however, is actually made up of two medium sized black banding lines with short staggered dashes painted in between them and on a wide white banding line.  On the bottom edge of the lower black banding line is a normal thin white banding line. As can be seen on this bowl, the black glazed paint (normal on Fourmile) appears green against a white background, and black against an orange background.

Approximate Dimensions: 9 3/4" or 25 cm. by 4 1/2" or 11.3 cm.

This is rare as effigys are usually painted on the interiors of Fourmile Polychrome bowls,

and fish are rarely depicted in Prehistoric Southwestern Ceramics.

The wide banding lines (connected directly to the design are done in glaze paint while the black solids within them are not.  Would the glaze and matte black be considered two separate colors?
