TYPE: Encinas Red-on-Brown DATE: A.D. 950 to 1200 (Heckman, 2000;66) PRIMARY BOWL DESIGN PLACEMENT: Interiors. COMMON DESIGNS: Wavy lines and straight lines, curvilinear and rectilinear scrolls, barbed lines. Designs may or may not be polished over creating blurred or sharp designs. KEY DIFFERENCES: No white slip, some may have an interior tan slip. The smeared or polished over designs are especially diagnostic, although many are not polished over and have sharp designs. VARIETIES: Partial or complete exterior red slip No exterior red slip "Blurred" variety (polished over design while paint may have been wet, or polished with a wet polishing stone, creating a smeared or blurred effect) "Sharp" variety (non-polished design or polished when paint was dry)
COMMENTS: The "sharp" variety usually does not have a red exterior slip, while the "blurred" variety often has a partial or completely red slipped exterior.
