TYPE: Chupadero Black-on-White DATE: A.D. 1150 to 1550 (Oppelt, 2008;8) BOWL DESIGN PLACEMENT: Primary interior designs. Secondary exterior designs rarely occur, when they do, it is usually on later examples. COMMON DESIGNS: Designs were essentially the same as Socorro Black-on-White although not as finely executed. Early examples had designs like Mogollon Mimbres Black-on-White, although without life forms. Jar necks usually had simple designs of dots, lines, or connected chevrons. Occasionally jar necks were undecorated. The rims were usually painted or "ticked". Banded designs were common, bowls often have a wide band above and below the design although some bowl designs go to the rim. KEY DIFFERENCES: Mineral paint, jar interiors heavily scored. Socorro Black-on-White jar interiors were usually smoothed. COMMENTS: This type is considered a regional variation of Socorro Black-on-White. SLIP OR SURFACE TREATMENT: Thin white slip usually applied on the interiors of bowls, rarely exteriors. Exteriors are usually left unslipped, roughly smoothed and often appear "bumpy".
