TYPE: Dogoszhi Polychrome DATE: A.D. 1050 to 1300 (Oppelt, 2008;12) COMMON BACKGROUND COLOR(S): Primary design field red, secondary design field orange. PRIMARY BOWL DESIGN PLACEMENT: Interiors. COMMON DESIGNS: Diagonal hatched ( Dogoszhi style) black painted primary designs (rarely wide black lines), broad red stripes painted on secondary design fields. Occasionally an orange non-slipped space (often football or circular shaped) in bottom on interiors. KEY DIFFERENCES: Bowls with loop handles common. Diagonally hatched black designs (Dogoszhi style) on a red-slipped background for the primary designs, secondary designs consists of broad red stripes on an orange background. VARIETIES: 1) Black-on-Red Primary Design, Red-on-Orange Secondary Design 2) Black-on-Red-on-Orange Primary Design, Red-on-Orange Secondary Design 3) Black-on-Red areas in addition to broad red lines outlined in black Primary Design, Red-on-Orange Secondary Design 4) Black-on-Red and Orange Primary Design
1N Dogoszhi Polychrome Bowl This bowl is the normal variety, with its black-on-red interior, and red-on-orange exterior.
2N Dogoszhi Polychrome Bowl with a black-on-red-on-orange interior, and a red-on-orange exterior.
3N Dogoszhi Polychrome effigy handle pitcher. This unusual variety of Dogoszhi Polychrome has a black-on-red and orange primary design. The effigy handle appears to be a salamander or lizard with a red head and black stripes painted from neck to tail.
4N Dogoszhi Polychrome jar with a primary black-on-red exterior design, and a secondary red-on-orange interior design. The interior has a wide red circular band, painted about midway on the wall of the jar. Approximate Dimensions: 9 1/2" or 24.1 cm. by 7 1/4" or 18.4 cm.
