TYPE: Kiatuthlanna Black-on-White

DATE: A.D. 825 to 950 (Oppelt 2008;21)

BOWL DESIGN PLACEMENT: Primary interior designs, occasionally secondary exterior designs.

COMMON DESIGNS: The most common design is three, four, or multiple equally spaced solids or design motifs pendant on the interior of the rim (triangles are common), then usually multiple parrallel continuous thin lines are painted along the rim and around the motifs at angles parallel to the motifs forming a large negative blank space in the bottom that is often in the shape of a fat cross or plus or other geometric shape.  Sometimes a design is painted in the bottom.  Other simple design styles and layouts occur also. "Letter motifs", except for O's or circles, seemed to have phased out by now.  Kiatuthlanna design styles on bowls usually have a lot of open space in them.  The rims are usually painted. Ticked solids, as well as squiggle lines are common. Long wavy or squiggle lines are considered diagnostic, as well as concentric squares and triangles.

KEY DIFFERENCES: Usually thin linework. Painted surfaces of most Kiatuthlanna and later types are now slipped white and tool polished, although the exteriors of bowls and interiors of jars may be smooth or rough.  Late White Mound Black-on-White design styles overlap with Kiatuthlanna.
