TYPE: Obelisk Brown (AKA Obelisk Utility) DATE: A.D. 200 to 600 for vessels other than miniatures and pipes, A.D. 200 to 1300+ for miniature vessels, effigies, and pipes. (Reed, 2000:207 & 217) KEY DIFFERENCES: Early forms, usually polished, fine temper, often smooth to the touch, tan to dark brown to brown/gray in color. Miniatures and small effigies are often not polished. Lino Polished is usually gray in color. TEMPER: Fine sand or sandstone if added. Temper often added to later examples. SLIP OR SURFACE TREATMENT: Not slipped (hand smoothed). Early examples are often highly polished, late examples (after A.D. 600) are usually only hand smoothed and can be rough. COMMENTS: The gray/brown variety for vessels other than miniatures or pipes is dated from about A.D. 500 to 600 (Reed, 2000:217). Obelisk Utility should have been named a brown ware.
