Pendants are hanging ornaments that were usually worn in a necklace. They come in a variety of shapes from square, round, oval, rectangular, tear drop, cylindrical, and effigies. They were made from potsherds, shell and stone.

The original vessel would have looked very similar to this piece:

When the original pottery vessel was constructed it was made to have opposing sets of hanging holes,

these hanging holes were a little off center for the face so when the sherd was turned into a pendant the owner "pump drilled"  a new hole to make the pendant hang evenly. The original two holes are the left, the new hole is on the right.
