TYPE: Bluff Black-on-Red DATE: A.D. 780 to 1000 (Oppelt 2008;5) BOWL DESIGN PLACEMENT: Interiors. COMMON DESIGNS: Medium linework (approximately 1/8") that sometimes has wide linework (approximately 1/4" to greater than 1 ") in addition. Early examples have designs similar to Abajo Red-on-Orange, later examples have thinner linework. PAINT: The paint is usually iron oxide or manganese resulting in brown black or even purple colors. KEY DIFFERENCES: Black designs on a non-slipped orange background (commonly on a thin red slip). VARIETIES: Non Slipped Orange Background Thin Slipped Red Background COMMENTS: The two varieties should be types based on their technological differences and are likely temporally significant. The non-slipped orange variety tend to have broader linework as seen in Abajo Red-on-Orange while the red slipped variety tend to have thinner linework.

2Y Anasazi Bluff Black-on-Red Sherd with wide (up to 1/2") and thin (1/16") linework. Bluff Black-on-Red vessels that have wide linework (in addition to the thin) appear to be transitional from Abajo to Bluff. Perhaps these vessels are early temporally. This sherd is slipped red on the interior and exterior.
