TYPE: Obelisk Black-on-Brown

DATE: A.D. 1200 to 1325 (see comments)

COMMON DESIGNS: Simple curvilinear or angular designs.

BACKGROUND COLOR: Brown.

KEY DIFFERENCES: Mineral paint.

TEMPER: Fine sand or sandstone if added. Temper often added to later examples.

SLIP OR SURFACE TREATMENT: Not slipped (hand smoothed). Early examples are often highly polished, late examples (after A.D. 600) are usually only hand smoothed and can be rough.

PAINT: Mineral.

COMMENTS: Dates are based on the fact that the only two currently known vessels of this exact type were found together in a Tularosa/Pinedale Period Room (Platt Ranch, Northern Arizona).
